Townhomes
Townhomes trade some space for lower maintenance. Read the HOA documents closely.

Read the association documents
A townhome's monthly cost is more than the mortgage. Ask for the HOA's current budget, reserve study if one exists, recent meeting minutes and any planned special assessments. These documents show whether roofs, siding and shared areas are funded or whether owners should expect a bill later.
Check the rules too: rental caps, pet limits, exterior changes and parking assignments all vary by community.

Townhome or single-family?
Townhomes suit buyers who want less exterior upkeep and a smaller footprint. Single-family homes trade more maintenance for more control over the lot. Use the home-type matcher on the Homes page to compare the two against your own priorities.
