Downtown

Downtown Kannapolis

Downtown is a compact, walkable district where a reworked West Avenue meets the ballpark and, a short walk away, the research campus.

Layout in plain terms

Think of downtown as a broad area rather than a single street. West Avenue is its main pedestrian spine — a street and a destination in its own right — with storefronts, restaurants and public gathering space. Atrium Health Ballpark sits at the edge of the core, and the North Carolina Research Campus lies just across the rail corridor.

Not every building or open space downtown is public. Private business premises, ballpark property and campus property each have their own access rules.

What changed — concretely

The City of Kannapolis purchased much of the downtown core in 2015 and has since rebuilt streets, utilities and public spaces, and built the ballpark, which opened in 2021. Private development has followed in phases. Where a project is still proposed or under construction, we say so.

Social district

Kannapolis has operated a social district downtown. Boundaries, hours and participating businesses are set by the city and can change; do not assume every downtown space or the ballpark participates. Check the City of Kannapolis for current rules before you go.
