History
Kannapolis History
Few American cities were shaped as completely by a single company — and few have had to reinvent themselves so publicly.

In brief
- Early 1900s: James William Cannon builds a textile mill and a company town on farmland north of Concord.
- Mid-century: Cannon Mills becomes one of the world's largest makers of towels and household textiles.
- 1984: Kannapolis incorporates as a city.
- 2003: Pillowtex, the mill's last owner, closes — one of the largest single layoffs in North Carolina history.
- 2005 onward: the plant site becomes the North Carolina Research Campus.
- 2015 onward: the city buys and rebuilds much of downtown; the ballpark opens in 2021.
How we write history
We rely on city records, archives and established historical institutions, and we label images clearly. Images on this site are AI-generated, not archival photographs.
Where the history shows today
The mill's legacy is visible across the city: in the grid of older residential streets, in the research campus on the former plant site, and in a downtown the city bought and rebuilt. Our guides follow each thread — the company town, the closure, the campus and the redevelopment — and the journal adds longer stories over time.
