History
Downtown Development
When a city buys its own downtown, the result is a decade of visible work. Here's how to read it.
Completed and open
- City acquisition of much of the downtown core (2015).
- West Avenue streetscape and public spaces.
- Atrium Health Ballpark (opened 2021).
Proposed, approved or under way
Private residential and mixed-use phases have been announced over time. Status changes; we label projects as proposed, approved, funded, under construction or complete, and link to the city for the current record.
What it does not tell you
Public investment downtown does not guarantee the value of any individual property. Evaluate a home on its own condition, location and price.
Following a project's status
City council agendas and minutes, development announcements and permit records show where a project stands. When you read about a new building downtown, look for which stage it's in — proposed, approved, funded, under construction or complete — before treating it as a fact on the ground.
