Where to focus

  • Space planning first.
  • Layered lighting.
  • Kitchens and baths.
  • Materials suited to the house's era.
  • Window treatments and furnishings.

Working with an older floor plan

Established Kannapolis homes often have smaller rooms and fewer outlets than modern plans. Good design works with that: furniture scaled to the rooms, lighting that adds layers without new ceiling fixtures everywhere, and storage built into otherwise unused corners.

In new construction the challenge is the opposite — large open rooms that need definition through rugs, lighting and furniture groupings.

Sequencing design with construction

If a renovation is coming, bring design in before the contractor finalizes the scope. Lighting locations, cabinet layouts and tile choices affect rough-in work, and changing them afterward costs more.
